The Sunset Resort is idyllically situated on Rarotonga's highly sought-after western ‘sunset’ coast, and located absolute beachfront next to the stunning ‘bluer than blue’ lagoon. Set amidst majestic palm trees, expansive lawns stretching down to the pristine white sand beach, and lush tropical gardens - the Sunset Resort is your PERFECT choice for a relaxing, tropical island getaway.

During whale season (June – October), the resort offers a superb vantage point to sight these majestic visitors to our shores. A favorite pastime for many returnee guests is to relax in a hammock or lounger under the palm trees or in the beachside cabana, with a good book and refreshing drink from the Birdcage Bar and witness these incredible mammals as they pass by.

 

Choice of Rooms

The eco-friendly resort, inviting guests 15yrs+, offers 35 tastefully furnished, spacious and superbly appointed suites and studios, all situated either beachfront or amongst tropical gardens beside one of the two large swimming pools. With a variety of room types available (including 'Accessible' rooms), the resort is perfect for couples, singles, adult families and groups. 

All studios and suites feature air-conditioning, fully-equipped kitchenette, cooktop, microwave, fridge/freezer, UV filtered drinking water, split king-size bed/s, colour TV, in-room safe and IDD phone, with a private furnished patio or balcony. 

The Two-Bedroom Beachfront Suite features a full kitchen facilities - with full size fridge, oven and dishwasher.

 

Guest Laundry

A guest laundry is located on-site - it is free to do washing, with washing powder provided.  To use the dryer – 2 tokens are required which are purchased from reception at NZ$1 per token.

 

Transfers

Sunset Resort offers a 24 hour airport transfer service for international and domestic flights at minimal cost.

Our reception office hours are 8:30am – 6:00pm daily. Given this – the transfer service is mandatory for guests arriving at the Rarotonga Airport before 8am in the morning or after 4pm in the evening. Our transfer driver will manage the check in process for guests outside of office hours.

Complimentary transfers are available to the Punanga Nui Market on Saturday morning and the local Arorangi church services on Sunday morning. 

 

Location

Ideally situated for convenience, the resort is a short 4km drive from the airport and 6km from the island’s main township of Avarua and the Saturday morning Punanga Nui Market.

There is a local bus stop at the entrance to the resort. Over the road from the resort is an excellent bakery and within easy walking distance is the local Rarotonga Brewery, the golf course, and a convenience store.

A number of popular restaurants and cafes are located close-by.

Medical care is also nearby with a small medical centre over the road from the Resort and the hospital which has an outpatients service is a 5 minute drive.

 

Getting around the island is easy!

There is a sheltered bus-stop right outside the resort on the main road, so guests can explore our island home easily by taking the ‘clockwise’ or ‘anti-clockwise’ bus from your doorstep.  If you are planning on using the bus you can download the App and then locating where a bus is at any time is easy. 
For guests with a rental car, we offer free on-site parking.

 

Our small resort ‘with a big heart’ also has accessible walkways to both swimming pools, the restaurant, poolside bar, our expansive green lawn which leads to the deck at our private stunning beach. 

Our friendly, local staff are known by many of our returnee guests for their famous "Kia Orana" spirit, and will do everything possible to ensure your stay in our little piece of paradise is idyllic. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Birdcage Bar

The popular pool-side Birdcage Bar, complete with ‘swim-up’ bar, opens daily from mid-afternoon to early evening. 

Happy hour is every hour at the Birdcage Bar, but they do have a special Cocktail of the Day.

Serving delicious cocktails along with non-alcoholic beverages, beers, wines and spirits at great prices – it is the perfect place to chill after a day exploring our little island.

Why not sip a refreshing sundowner drink at the bar whilst mingling with other guests, relax in the swimming pool or take your drink to the beachfront to enjoy one of Rarotonga’s stunning sunsets.

Anchorage Restaurant & Bar

The on-site Anchorage Restaurant & Bar is surrounded by tropical gardens and opens  daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A tropical breakfast is served daily for in-house guests, or a cooked breakfast can be ordered off the menu.

This fully licensed restaurant features a full bar service and offers à-la-carte menus with themed nights during the week, including our popular Sunday night roast with entertainment provided by a local island string band.

The complimentary tropical breakfast for in-house guests is served between 7.30am - 10am and includes a range of cereals (some gluten free options), breads/toast, spreads, seasonal fruits, homemade yoghurt, juice, filtered water and selection of teas and freshly brewed filter coffee. 

Lunch is available from 11:30am – 2:30pm daily, with dinner served from 5:30 – with last food orders taken at 8:45pm.

Snacks and drinks are available throughout the day and can be served in the restaurant, poolside or at the beachfront.

Guest Hospitality Rooms

Located at the Birdcage Bar, these 2 spacious bathrooms offer a convenient space for guests to freshen up prior to their 12pm checkin or when awaiting their airport transfer after checking out.

Complete with shower, toilet, towels and toiletries, these rooms are complimentary for in-house guests only. 

Water Activities

Swim and snorkel directly off the white sand beach and check out our amazingly, clear turquoise lagoon teeming with different marine life.

Beach towels are provided in your room and can be exchanged as needed at reception.

Given the advent of COVID – we recommend that guests bring their own snorkelling equipment as the resort does not supply these.
